How To Manage A Great Project
In my last post, I laid out the foundations of a successful project – the planning. With the plan in place, it’s on to managing the project.
One thing I’ve learned over the years is the value of a daily standup with the core team. It comes from an Agile approach and it’s a great way to keep on top of everything that is going on. Limit the meeting to 20 minutes and use these steps with each team member:
What did I do yesterday?
What will I do today?
Are any blockers preventing my work, or are there call-outs we should be aware of?
Monitor your project with tools
Without tools, it’s very difficult to track project progress, conversations, decisions, status updates, progress, story points, effort, sprints, milestones, tasks, budgets and deadlines. To stay organised, use some of the excellent project management software solutions available:
Carefully manage your risks, schedule and budgets. If these are not well maintained, they can very quickly cause your project to fail. Establish regular reporting sessions to give project sponsors and stakeholders up to date information
Scope creep, otherwise known as project changes, can very quickly derail the momentum of a project. Adding new requirements not only effects your schedule but will increase your budget and impede your team’s progress. Wherever possible, change requests should be added only to meet the original objectives and deliverables of the project.
Wherever and whenever possible, communicate success. The end of a sprint or a milestone are great opportunities to do this. Take the opportunity to share praise and acknowledgment with your team; it will keep everyone motivated and working towards a successful delivery.
Time to deliver your project
When it’s time to deliver your project:
Test thoroughly and ensure the quality was delivered as expected;
Ensure you have trained everyone well; document everything;
Hand the project over to the business users;
Close the project, close the financials, document the lessons learnt,
